Onyx Acquired by Zoom
Zoom has acquired Onyx (onyx.app), the open source enterprise search and AI chat company backed by Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, Pioneer Fund, and Y Combinator. Co-founders Yuhong Sun and Chris Weaver announced the deal on Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed.
Onyx connects to the applications a company already runs, including Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Confluence, and Salesforce, indexes what is in them along with permissions, and serves that context to people and to AI agents through a chat interface. The pitch from the start was that teams handing over their most sensitive internal data should be able to run the whole system themselves.
The company says it now handles more than a million queries per week, has passed 30,000 GitHub stars, and counts NASA, Nebius, Ramp, and UC San Diego among its users. The team of 18 is joining Zoom and continuing on the same product.
Weaver said Onyx will remain open source, model agnostic, app agnostic, and self-hostable under Zoom, and that the acquisition gives the team more resources to build toward a secure context layer any team can host itself.
"Zoom is taking work from conversation to completion. Agents need context to do that, and it's exactly what we built."
Yuhong Sun, Co-Founder of OnyxSun also said Zoom is committing to open source more broadly, with Onyx as the first piece of that effort. The acquisition follows Zoom's purchase of go-to-market intelligence company Common Room, which closed in July.
Onyx went through Y Combinator in the Winter 2024 batch and raised a $10 million seed in March 2025 co-led by Khosla Ventures and First Round Capital, with Pioneer Fund, Y Combinator, and angels including Gokul Rajaram, Arash Ferdowsi, and Amit Agarwal participating.
Sun and Weaver started the company in 2023, Sun after working on transformer architectures for natural language to SQL and hybrid search at Alation, and Weaver after a stint as a tech lead at Robinhood.
